Show your pet some love this Valentine's Day without breaking the bank
With Valentine's Day just around the corner, it's time to show the special individuals in our lives just how much we love them – even if they have four paws rather than two feet!
"We can always rely on our pets to show us unconditional love and support, and because of this, many of us can feel more comfortable with our pets than with people" explains PDSA Vet Nurse Nina Downing. "That's why they definitely deserve something special in return this Valentine's Day – but it doesn't have to break the bank!
"Now, although we try, our pets don't always love the things we do for them. For example, giving your cat or dog direct eye contact is a big no-no, and not all dogs like being patted on the head. Luckily, we're here to help you with the things your pet will love!"

Go on a new walking route
"This is only really for dogs, but taking them on a new walking route you've never been on before (or one you haven't been on in a long time) with lots of new sounds and smells is a great way to show you love them. They'll really appreciate being able to take their time and have a proper explore, so make sure you set aside plenty of time, without having to rush back.

Play their favourite game
"Most pets love to play and you might find yours has a favourite game they like to play with you, but also try to introduce some new ones to make life interesting. Plan where you can fit in some extra time to dedicate to playing with your pet – it'll help the two of you bond, keep them active and show them just how important they are to you. Fun time is great for both physical and mental health not just for you, but for your pet too.

Make them a fun new toy
"We all like getting gifts and our pets are no different. It's good to keep our pets toys varied and rotate them so they don't get bored, keeping some back for a while and reintroducing them once they've got tired of playing with the first set. Making a new toy yourself for your dog, cat or rabbit is a great idea, it means their toys are unique and you can recycle materials to save waste. Before throwing away your egg boxes, make a snuffle feeder with just a few household items for your cat. They will love it if you put some of their favourite treats in some kitchen roll or fabric, scrunch it up loosely and place it into the egg cups. Don't forget to supervise your pets when they play to keep them safe and even better join in the game!

Pamper them
"Pets often like a stroke or a scratch behind the ears, maybe even a bit of a gentle massage but we shouldn't underestimate the importance of keeping on top of their fur condition. Longer haired pets need a little extra help on the grooming front as they can develop knots that pull especially around the groin and under forelegs, while long ears and hairy toes can become matted and sore, a regular groom will keep them feeling amazing. If your pet enjoys being brushed, make time for a daily brush (it'll also help to keep on top of pet hair around the home).

Spend quality time together
"Mostly, your pet will just enjoy having you around. Whether that means sitting on the sofa and watching TV while your cat curls up on your lap or chilling in the garden with your dog, they'll just love to be with you. Try to make sure you put aside as much time as you can, just you and your pet to make them feel really appreciated."
