A dog licking a window

Here’s why your dog is licking the windows and how to remove it

Pet owners have been told how to remove smudge marks from their dogs licking windows and glass doors, including using mayonnaise.

Experts at MeandMyGlass.co.uk have revealed why dogs like to lick the glass and have shared their top tips on how to remove pet marks from around the home.

Licking glass can be a sign of comfort for dogs and the action is seen as a natural self-soother. Dogs who may be feeling anxious might lick windows to relieve stress, or just because they're bored.

However, these grubby dog marks can leave windows and glass doors looking cloudy and dirty. Luckily there are several household items that are an easy and affordable way to get glass shiny again. Mayonnaise and olive oil can be applied to the marks and then wiped away with a microfibre cloth to lift off any drool. Lemon juice or fabric softener diluted with water will create a handy solution to remove any marks pets have left on the glass.

John Cutts, glass expert at MeandMyGlass.co.uk said: "It can be annoying to see your pets licking the windows around the house or in your car. But this is a sign of comfort for dogs who may be feeling anxious, or if they are bored. These streak marks can leave glass looking dirty - but luckily the drool is easy to remove with several items you'll find in the back of your cupboard."

"Mayonnaise will lift off drool stuck to glass after leaving it to sit on the mark for a few minutes and wiping away with a microfibre cloth. Use a damp cloth with olive oil to easily remove dog drool from windows and doors - and fabric softener mixed with water is also a great solution. Any glass that pets are licking should be cleaned once a week to avoid any build up of drool and bacteria, which can be hard to remove if left for a while."

Here are seven household items to keep windows and doors clean from dog drool, from MeandMyGlass:

  1. Mayonnaise

The emulsifiers in mayonnaise can help lift off drool from glass - simply add a thin layer to the window, let it sit for a few minutes and then wipe away the stain with a microfibre cloth. Remove any mayo residue with hot soapy water.

  1. Lemon juice

Mix together lemon juice and water to create a solution to remove any tongue marks your dog has left on a glass door or window. The acidity will help cut through the drool and keep the glass clean.

  1. Olive oil

Dampen a cloth with a small amount of olive oil and use gentle circular motions on the affected area to break down any residue your dog has left on the window.

  1. Fabric softener

Dilute some fabric softener with equal parts of water and spray onto the drool marks. Leave the solution to sit for a few minutes before blotting away with a cloth or paper towel. Make sure to clean the area afterwards as the chemicals can be toxic to dogs.

  1. Dish soap

Create a soapy mixture with dish soap and warm water. Use a microfiber cloth to rub the solution into the drool on the glass to lift any marks off.

  1. DIY cleaning solution

Mix together equal parts of white vinegar and warm water to make a cleaning solution to remove marks. Spray onto the glass and wipe clean in circular motions to avoid streaking.

  1. Magic eraser

A few wipes with a magic eraser will easily remove any buildup of drool on glass windows and doors. With this sponge there is no need to apply too much pressure or scrub hard.
