This clever car hack for dog walkers has been viewed more than two million times on Instagram - and it could save your nostrils from a poo smell nightmare.

Australian influencer Leasheswithlennon reckons she's come up with the perfect solution for scenarios where pooch lovers return to their car carrying a full bag of poop - only to discover there's no bin nearby in which to deposit it in.

Rather than having to place the foul-smelling package into your vehicle's cabin for the ride home, she instead opens up the fuel filler cap and stows the poop bag in there

The dog walker, from Melbourne, explains: "One time we went for a hike & as like often, not a single bin in sight, so we politely took a poo bag in the car home with us 🤢 First and very last time that decision was ever made.. Now I don't have to clench my nose, keep all 4 windows down and blast the aircon the whole way home. I mean it's the perfect size and every car has one?"

Lots of social media users have endorsed the hack.

One commented: "I once put a poobag in the back of my running pack... double bagged. Didn't make a difference. That running pack had to be washed twice before the smell came out lol."

Another laughed: My fuel flap has a button inside that flings it open when pushed, good for when someone's tailgating you."

Meanwhile Graham Conway, of UK vehicle lease firm Select Car Leasing, advised motorists to proceed with caution - and urged them not to forget about the stashed bag either.

He explained: "On the face of it, this looks like a foolproof 'hack' for dog owners who don't want to end up with a festering bag of mess in the cabin of their car.

"You do, however, need to be careful when interfering with a car's fuel filler cap. Make sure you don't disrupt the cap's locking mechanism by accidentally trapping the bag in it.

"Modern vehicles also have sophisticated sensors in the fuel filler cap area which monitor for leaks, and can trigger an engine warning light or shut-down the entire ignition system if it detects a fault.

"My concern would be scenarios where a poo bag might get forgotten about for days, or even weeks, on end, only to tear and leak and cause damage to the seal of the fuel cap itself, potentially leading to an expensive repair.

"You might be better off investing in an air-tight waste bin for the boot of your car instead."

Other motorists on social media admitted to placing dog poo bags under their windscreen wipers - in a bid to make sure they don't forget about it when they get home.
