The Renters Rights' Bill could end the 'pet privilege' where only those who own their home have the right to own a pet, according to a leading cat charity.

Cats Protection says blanket 'no pet' policies are unfair and deny millions of animal lovers the chance to own a companion animal.

The UK's largest cat charity says it currently takes in at least three cats a day due to landlords not allowing them in their properties.

Director of Advocacy & Influence for Cats Protection Jeff Knott said: "Refusing pets creates a 'pet privilege' which is unfair, outdated and does not reflect modern life. It means those who own their home can experience the joy, fun and comfort which comes with owning a cat or dog, but those who rent are either banned, or will find it incredibly difficult to do so.

"If renters jump through enough hoops, they may find rented housing that allows pets, but that's not the end of the story. They then live in fear of a change in circumstances as they are fully aware of how difficult it will be to find another pet-friendly property."
