Pet owners pay £81 more per month to rent than the average renter in the UK
We've explored popular online room rental websites to reveal where in the UK renters are being priced out of the rental market, and where the demand for rental properties far outstrips supply.
This is what we've discovered:
- 52.7% of people's budgets are too low to afford the average rent in the UK with an average rental costing of £553 per month in England.
- York is the pet-friendliest city in the UK for renters. For every 100 available rooms, 15.2 are open to renters with pets. That's a higher proportion than any other UK city.
- Wakefield and Hull are the least pet-friendly cities in the UK with only 2.8 and 2.9 available rooms per 100.
- However, in order to find a place, pet owners have to pay £81 more per month than the average renter in the UK.

Rental prices vs renters' budgets
Our analysis of online room rental ads in the UK revealed that people's average budget was actually slightly higher than the average price of rent (£559 vs. 549), however more than half (52.7%) of budgets were still too low to afford the average room rental.

Average rental price per month and average single renter budget per month data was sourced from popular online room rental sites in the UK. Northern Ireland is excluded from our overall UK country breakdown because there wasn't a large enough sample of data for different cities. Average budget figures are an average of all single renter budgets as advertised on their online profiles. Outliers with large budgets can increase the overall average budget figures.

For every 100 available rooms to rent in York, 15.2 are open to renters with pets. That's a higher proportion than any other UK city.

How much more does it cost to rent with your pet?
We've discovered that in the UK pet owners have to pay £81 more per month to rent than the average renter. England has the most significant difference, where renters have to pay £106 more to rent with their pets.
