Vet explains how to keep plaque on your dog’s teeth at bay
From ear wax removal to blackhead popping, TikTok is a well-known destination for those who enjoy oddly satisfying videos. Yet the latest trend to surface, which highlights various clips of plaque being removed from dogs' teeth, has raised some concerns among experts.
The social content platform is awash with videos of trained professionals removing excess buildup of plaque from canine teeth, and despite how mesmerising the videos may be to watch, the trend has prompted Head Vet Sean McCormack to urge the importance of keeping pets teeth and mouths healthy, in order to prevent serious and painful issues in their later years.
The team at dog food subscription platform tails.com have provided tips below on how to keep plaque at bay.
Head Vet Sean McCormack said: "Keeping your dog's teeth and mouth clean is important to help prevent gum disease. If their teeth aren't cleaned regularly, bacteria, plaque and tartar build up, and become trapped within the gum line. Over time, this can cause gum disease, loss of teeth, pain in the cavity, redness and gingivitis.
"Dental disease is unfortunately one of the most common illnesses amongst dogs, with 12.5% of dogs suffering from the condition in the UK. Despite this alarming figure, more than one in five dog owners admit to never brushing their dogs teeth.
"We've spotted an alarming new trend on TikTok, which shows the removal of plaque from canine teeth. This unfortunately is very common, can cause discomfort to pets, and in some cases leads to tooth loss. However, it is easily preventable by simply taking more time and effort to care for your pet's teeth and gums.
How to keep your dog's teeth clean and healthy:
-
Brush your dog's teeth
Just like humans, our dogs benefit from regular dental checks at home and frequent brushing. Make checking your dog's mouth at least once a week part of their routine - this can help you catch any problems before they become serious.
Brushing your dog's teeth with dog-friendly toothpaste at least three times a week will help remove plaque and prevent tartar build-up in the mouth. It's crucial that you brush your dog's teeth when they are in a calming environment, and a relaxed state.
-
Try dental chews
Along with brushing frequently, dental chews are a great addition to your dog's oral health routine - they are designed to remove plaque and reduce tartar buildup on the teeth.
Chewing provides great mental stimulation for your dog, relieves boredom and prevents anxiety, as it releases endorphins, which act as a natural stress reliever. Plus, they are a great way to reward your dog for their good behaviour!
-
Healthy fruits and vegetables
Feeding your dog treats high in sugar can cause a build-up of plaque and tartar, so check the sugar quantity when looking for meaty treats, biscuits and dental chews. It's also important to avoid table scraps and foods that are not suitable for your four-legged friend, like processed meats, bread, cake and other sweet treats.
Certain foods in your dog's diet, like fruit and vegetables can help to break down plaque buildup on the teeth. Apples are a great source of vitamins A and C, and they are a healthy way to keep your dogs mouth and teeth looking and smelling clean. But make sure you remove all pips from the apple before feeding them to your four-legged friend!

Dental toys
Chewing dental toys can not only relieve boredom, lower stress levels and provide a safe alternative to bones, but they can also help to keep your dog's teeth and gums clean. The toys are designed to help scrape away any tartar buildup and plaque, while increasing antibacterial salvia released from the mouth.
It's important to ensure that your dog's dental toys are clean and sanitary to avoid a build-up of bacteria. To do this simply place them in a water bowl of water, add distilled white vinegar and use an old toothbrush to remove any dirt and saliva buildup.
