“IBS in dogs is somewhat rare, but not completely impossible - so if your dog is experiencing digestive issues it’s important to consider IBS as a possibility.

What is IBS in dogs?

Similar to humans, IBS is a condition that affects the digestive system in dogs , resulting in an upset stomach.

What causes IBS in dogs?

There isn’t one definitive answer to what the cause is, but is commonly set off by stimulants such as food allergies or stress. It’s also possible that IBS can be triggered by bacterial infections or irritation in the bowel from obstructions in the intestines. Seek medical attention from your vet to help narrow down the cause.

What are the symptoms of IBS in dogs?

  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Sudden urge to go to the toilet
  • Constipation
  • Straining to go to the toilet
  • Loss of appetite
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal discomfort

How can you help your dog if they have IBS?

It’s best to identify the source of the dog's stress and reduce or eliminate it where possible. Sources can’t always be identified or controlled, but your vet will be able to help create a plan to help manage your dogs gastrointestinal symptoms and stress levels. Vets can prescribe medication to relieve symptoms and help your dog begin to feel better. Vets often recommend high-fibre diets or fibre supplements to control IBS symptoms  in dogs. It’s advised to seek medical treatment for dogs suffering with gastrointestinal issues to prevent suffering from further issues in the future.”
